Sage 50 hints and tips: requirements for Making Tax Digital

Is your Sage 50 accounting software compliant with the new mandatory online VAT filing requirements coming into force from April 2019?

Current versions of Sage 50 accounting software allow you to file VAT returns electronically. You can do this through the government “gateway”. However this is changing as part of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital programme.

Check your Sage 50 version

From next April all VAT registered businesses must file VAT returns electronically (no manual option) through a new HMRC portal.

You will already be considered compliant if you are on version 24 (2018) and pay by monthly subscription, because your subscription entitles you to the new Sage VAT module.

If you are not already on a subscription plan you will need to consider subscribing to Sage’s new VAT module (typically £25 per month plus vat) or move to an inclusive monthly subscription from your next renewal date.

Updating your system

Sage direct sales will be contacting Sage users, if they have not already done so. However it is worth bearing in mind that they may not be able to advise you on the most cost efficient option to choose going forwards.

Working with Sage, we are able to secure competitive subscription rates which are not available to direct sales.
