British Polio Fellowship

Improving efficiencies to free up resources

The British Polio Fellowship (BPF) is dedicated to helping, supporting and empowering the approximately 120,000 people in the UK living with the late effects of Polio and the neurological condition Post Polio Syndrome (PPS). The charity provides information, welfare and support to those living with PPS to enable all to live full independent and integrated lives. Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a neurological condition that can occur in people who have had Polio. After a long time without any significant change in their condition, people may develop new symptoms of increasing weakness, stamina problems, fatigue and pain.

We have been auditors to the BPF for four years and have developed a close working relationship with them over this time.  As part of our service commitment we are always looking at how we can improve and support clients’ business needs and help them deliver their vision, which is particularly critical to charities’ fundraising and volunteer efforts.

With around 50 branches across the country, many staffed by volunteers, the BPF is very dependent on the goodwill and passion of these volunteers to be able to do their job and not be over-burdened by administrative imperatives.

Charity regulatory requirements mean they need to be rigorous with their financial accounting and many volunteers are not expert in these matters, but fortunately we were able to identify ways for BPF to quickly and easily obtain what they needed from their branches for financial reporting requirements, which improved their business efficiency and prevented distracting volunteers from vital liaison and support functions. During our audit we worked with their central and branch offices to implement these changes to ensure a seamless process. One of our Audit team spends time on a regular basis at the main HQ to provide ongoing liaison and support where needed.

Terry Blackman, Trustee Treasury Liaison comments

“As a charity we need to be compliant and transparent in our financial dealings. We have found Roffe Swayne to be a reliable source of accounting and tax advice and support through the years we have worked together – they understand us and what we need to do, and are always there to help us with solutions to problems or just day to day advice.”
