Assistance if you cannot pay your tax bill on time
If you have missed a tax payment or are unable to pay an upcoming tax payment and you are not covered by the automatic VAT and Self-Assessment payment deferrals mentioned above, contact the following who may be able to assist with arranging an instalments or other payment mechanism through HMRC’s Time To Pay service.
- The HMRC coronavirus (COVID-19) helpline (Telephone: 0800 024 1222 – Monday to Friday: 8am to 4pm), where the advisers can only talk to you about problems paying your taxes due to coronavirus (COVID-19). This could be Self-Assessment, VAT, employment taxes or Corporation Tax.
- The Self-Assessment helpline (Telephone: 0300 200 3822 – Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm) if you’ve missed your payment date or you cannot use the online service. You do not need to contact HMRC if you have set up a payment plan online.
- If you have received a payment demand, like a tax bill or a letter threatening you with legal action, call the HMRC office that sent you the letter.
- Otherwise, call the Payment Support Service (Telephone: 0300 200 3835 – Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm) if you have not received a bill or letter.
Arrangements are agreed on a case-by-case basis and are tailored to individual circumstances and liabilities.
