Support for businesses during Coronavirus

Business rates relief has been announced, provising further support for businesses in retail, hospitality and leisure sectors.

Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors, i.e. those with properties that are a:

  • Shop
  • Restaurant, café, bar or pub
  • Cinema or live music venue
  • Assembly or leisure property, e.g. a sports club, gym or spa
  • Hospitality property, e.g. a hotel, guest house or self-catering accommodation

will not have to pay business rates for the 2020 to 2021 tax year.

Nurseries, i.e. businesses on Ofsted’s Early Years Register and providing care and education for children up to 5 years, will also not have to pay business rates for the 2020 to 2021 tax year.

The discount will be automatically applied by the relevant local council. This may require bills to be reissued in some cases which the council will do as soon as possible.

Businesses should contact their local council if they do not get the business rates relief they are expecting.
