Simon’s experience to date
When did you join?
I joined in April 2008, having previously worked for a larger firm.
What’s working in professional services like?
Working in tax requires discipline and a methodical mindset. There’s a lot to learn and you have to be dedicated to pass the exams, but the rewards are worth it. I enjoy the technical aspects of tax. It’s constantly evolving with changes in legislation, there is always something new on the horizon, which will affect our clients, so it’s important to keep up to date. It’s certainly not for everyone, but I like the mix of people and paperwork and I can see the career opportunities opening-up.
Why Roffe Swayne?
I liked the idea of the firm as an independent, which gives it a more definitive character, rather than just another office within a bigger firm. I feel it’s more of a reflection of our client base as well, as we deal mostly with owner managed businesses.
How have you found it?
It’s important for me to feel that I keep developing and at Roffe Swayne I’ve worked in personal and corporate tax. I also get involved with both compliance and advisory matters – it’s great that Partners and Managers are keen to see trainees develop. I’m sometimes invited to join client meetings and am getting more direct exposure to clients as I gain experience.
And the people?
Everyone is very friendly and supportive, but also willing to challenge to drive the quality of the work. The social side helps you to fit straight in; it’s a very social, caring place, no one feels left out.
What’s been the best moment so far?
From an exam point of view, passing ATT was a great feeling, but the best moments are when I get to put what I have learned from my studies into practice.
And your plans for the future?
Having now passed my CTA, I would like to specialise in owner-managed businesses – hopefully at Roffe Swayne!
